The U . S . Soccer Federation has appointed Emma Hayes as the 10th full-time head coach in U . S . Women ’ s National Team history to replace Vladko Andronoski who resigned immediately after the Women World Cup 2024 held in Australia and New Zealand . The USWNT has been since managed by an interim coach Twila Kilgore .
Hayes is the second England-born coach to head the U . S . Women ’ s National Team , after Jill Ellis , who spent the entirety of her coaching career in the United States . Hayes is also the fourth full-time female head coach in USWNT history . She holds a UEFA Pro License .
Twila , the now interim coach , will be Emma ’ s assistant . Now she ’ s empowered to take care the team with guidance from Emma , even though at distance . She has the ability to tap with Emma and learn from her meanwhile she ’ s not here , said Matt , US General Manger who knows Emma from a long time .
On August 17 almost immediately the early return of USWNT from 2023 FIFA Women World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand , the United States women ’ s national team head coach , Vlatko Andonovski , officially stepped down from his position . Andonovski ' s resignation follows the team ' s underwhelming performance throughout the World Cup tournament . Despite a victory over Vietnam in the group stage , the team struggled to secure decisive wins , only managing draws against the Netherlands and Portugal , which narrowly allowed them to advance to the knockout stage .
In the round of 16 , the US faced off against Sweden and put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw . The team only scored a total of four goals throughout the tournament , which was a significant drop in performance for a team that had never finished worse than third place in previous World Cup competitions .
Andonovski , 46 , took over as coach of the US team in October 2019 , succeeding Jill Ellis , who led the team to back-to-back World Cup titles . During his tenure , Andonovski achieved a 51-5-9 record with the team , including a 3-2-5 record in major tournaments .
The lackluster World Cup performance wasn ' t the only factor contributing to Andonovski ' s departure . The United States women ' s team also had a disappointing finish at the Tokyo Olympics , settling for a bronze medal .
Injuries also plagued the team leading up to the World Cup , with key players like Mallory Swanson and captain Becky Sauerbrunn unable to recover in time to compete . Additionally , rising star Catarina Macario ' s ACL injury further weakened the team ' s lineup .
The World Cup showcased the increasing competitiveness and parity in women ' s football , with other strong teams like Germany , Brazil , and Canada also being eliminated earlier than expected . The final between England and Spain will feature two teams vying for their first-ever World Cup triumph .
