Angel City Football Club ( ACFC ) named BECKI TWEED as their head coach on November 2 , 2023 . Just a few weeks after making history with Angel City by leading the team to its first playoff appearance , Tweed is already looking ahead to preseason next year .
Tweed began the 2023 NWSL campaign as assistant coach before being named interim head coach on June 14 , exactly midway through the season . She led the club to a 8 – 2 – 5 record in all competitions ( NWSL Regular Season , UKG Challenge Cup , and NWSL Playoffs ), including an 11-game unbeaten streak and the first playoff appearance in club history .
BECKI TWEED
Over her tenure , which was exactly half of the regular season , ACFC had the best record in the league , only losing once in both the NWSL regular season and UKG Challenge Cup . In the regular season , she earned 22 points ; no other team earned more than 17 points between weeks 12 and 22 . — Before joining ACFC , Tweed spent three seasons with NJ / NY Gotham FC , where she helped lead the club to a 2021 playoff appearance , as well as the 2021 Challenge Cup Final .
She was also co-head coach of the Gotham FC Reserves team that won the 2021 WPSL Championship .
The team included five players now on NWSL rosters . For her efforts , Tweed was honored as WPSL Coach of the Year .
In 2022 , Tweed served as an assistant coach for the United States in the FIFA Women ’ s U20
World Cup in Costa Rica and when the
U . S . team won the championship of the Sud Ladies Cup in France . Before working with Gotham FC and the U . S . Women ’ s U20 team , Tweed served as assistant coach for Monmouth University ’ s women ’ s soccer program , helping guide the team to a CAA Conference Championship .
Prior to coaching , Tweed played professionally for six years in the English Premier League for Bristol City and Millwall Lionesses , and also represented England in international competition at the youth level .
Tweed ' s new job title comes with new responsibilities . " I think obviously now there ' s room for a little bit more planning ," she says . " My job now is about what the entirety of next season will look like . What can we get out of preseason , what standards can we set , and how can we continue to move forward using that preseason time and space to grow ?"
At the same time , she says the basic philosophy that served the team so well during their tight playoff race doesn ' t change . " We played every single game for 12 games like it was a playoff game ," she says . " We had no room for error . We had no room for drop in points . And actually I think it ' s done us a world of good ."
That mindset is key because long-range strategizing , especially in the NWSL , only gets a team so far . " The season is long and you can ' t plan for a huge part of it , because you never know ," Tweed says . " Your plans are not going to go to plan , but you can count on the things that you know are a constant and that ' s preseason — being able to use that time to build on a standard , to build on a culture ."
