The competition format is a single game between the reigning NWSL Champion and the winner of the NWSL Shield in the previous season.
In 2024, Orlando Pride won both. They’ re the 2024 NWSL champion and also the winners of the 2024 NWSL Supporters’ Shield.
Washington Spirit is the 2024 runner up and got the opportunity for a rematch through the 2025 Challenge Cup.
